Wide-eyed and bookless

Not having a book isn't really that bad
It does mean some people may look down their nose
“Calls herself poet, she's always been mad”

Who cares though (not me?) when fun can be had
Writing and thinking and putting on shows
Not having a book isn't really that bad

If you take any failure there are ways to find glad
At least on this shelf I avoid critics' prose
“Calls herself poet, she's always been mad”

I won't ever be discounted, unsold and sad
Left rotting with Spice Girls' life stories in rows
You see, not having a book isn't really all bad

Might it even make me feel a bit closer to Dad?
He never made print and that's just how it goes
He called himself poet and, guess what, he was mad

So presses will roll and roll on this year's fad
The speed of it all, where's it going (who knows?)
But not having a book isn't really that bad
I'll call myself “poet”, does it matter if I'm mad?
